Effects of pregnancy on arrhythmogenesis

There is an increased propensity for arrhythmias during pregnancy. It is likely due to the combination of hemodynamic, hormonal, and autonomic changes related to pregnancy. Intravascular volume increases, augmenting the preload on the ventricles, and increasing both atrial and ventricular size. Myocardial stretch may contribute to arrhythmogenesis due to stretch-activated ion channel activity. There is also an increase in heart rate which may be arrhythmogenic.
